In 2013, Hilton renovated the Door of Hope housing complex located in Memphis, TN. I volunteered to create an opportunity for others to make framed artwork for the upcoming renovation.
The Door of Hope is a housing complex for individuals who have a long history of homelessness. I wanted to select images that reflected the soul of the Mid-South.
Stencils were cut to reflect the images selected and drawn with oil pastels to create a natural barrier for the participants to utilize.
At the event, I taught volunteers how to create a watercolor effect using only colored markers and water. Each attendee selected an oil pastel stencil and colored freely in the blank space to generate a beautiful piece of art.
Smaller stencils, a variety of water tools and pre-cut shapes were provided to encourage creative expression.
The results were awe inspiring!
