I NEED SPACE

I need space is an audio-visual installation  which premiered at Royal Academy of Arts in the Hague, Netherlands, on September 2020, and lately was a part of Master of Being, at iii, an artist run, community platform supporting new interdisciplinary practices linking performance, technology and the human senses. In this installation I research the relationship between physical and digital, the idea of perception, and synesthesia.

A combination of custom interactive software, interactive sound, motion design, rear projection system, I need space, lets the person who experiences the work to be part of the elements that build up the essence of matter. As the viewers master the essence, they experience the transformation, motion and harmony that may arise when interacting with the film. The installations aims to create a relationship of great intimacy with the viewer while wanting to keep the hierarchies between the two main characters. On one side the ephemeral and vulnerable human figure and on the other side something extremely vast and incomprehensible, almost impenetrable, such as the universe.

The video installation starts from a personal voyage to lead to a world connected with the other, the unknown. The viewer is encouraged to walk around the space and discover. The installation is about the power of language, blends words that are related to ideas of power, existence, and emotions. It begins with a blank image, like a blank canvas and it builds up thoughts, layers, shapes, etc. The installation is a game of light and darkness, which experiments with a minimal audio environment that illustrates a human experience. The movements are movements between abstract notions in thoughts, a dream-like state.
The project explores a different way of perceiving time, transforming the screen into an optical field, showing a hallucinatory choreography of light and darkness.
Goal of the installation is to discover new forms of physicality, and community in a post-digital world
Thank you for watching!
