The split second, also known by the italian name "Rattrapante" is a chronograph improvement that allows stop the measuring of time, and still keep running the main time keeping. When pressing again the split second hand follows the chronometer hand again. This feature was very used on earlier car races to keep the time of a selected part of the track, or a lap time.
