P8 Project: Converse Chuck Taylor All Star

By Mikey Amella & Maclaine Morgan
The main goal of these shots was to create an ad campaign that captured the uniqueness and playfulness of the Converse Chuck Taylor All Star shoes. The Run Star Hikes features shoe bottoms that are spikes and the COMME des Garçons feature art from Filip Pagowski. Converse ad campaigns are always out of the box and their photoshoots are nonconventional. We approached this commercial photoshoot with the intention of immediately grabbing the viewers attention. Our use of playful and vibrant colors and our unconventional set execute this greatly.
With this image being our main shot we wanted it to highlight all the unique qualities of the shoe while also being unconventional and intriguing to look at. To create the sunset effect we had a plain sky background but we had reflector with an orange gel shine onto the background which produced a sunset aesthetic. The shoe hanged from a fishing line attached to a pole which we edited out.
This shot tunes into the playful side of the photoshoot. It incorporates different styles of the Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars. This shot proved to be a little difficult because both or us are quite different in height and we had to pose our feet in a way that it looked more natural rather than staged.
To create this shot we decided to take the camera and create our own angles rather than have it rest on a stand. This allowed us to get in closer to the shoes and make it look like the person is walking up a hill. On a camera stand this shot would have been more difficult to execute. The lighting was also difficult for this shot because since we we shooting closer to the ground the overhead fill light was not as powerful and so it was a challenge to properly light the shoes without creating too many shadows.
These two shots create a contrast to the other more orange phtotogrpahs. While photographing this project we began to realize that lots of the shots began to blend together. As a result, we decided to edit some of the Converse COMME des Garçons shoes to have a more cool tone. The cool tone makes the image look like it was taken while the moon was out rather than the sun setting. We found that having a more blue tone added more contrast and variety to our magazine spread.
Before we started the project we knew knew we wanted our main image to standout. Instead of placing the shoe on a table or some type of platform we decided to hang the shoe from a pole connected by fishing line. Through editing we could make the show look like it was floating in the sky. We also wanted to maintain the "playful" and "dreamy" theme so we sketched out some possible complementary shost which included us putting our shoes up in the sky and us walking on some grass with the sky in the background.
Through Set a Light we were able to create our shots before we created them in the studio. This proved to be very helpful because we were able to play with multiple backgrounds flooring and lighting before our scheduled studio day.
