When charisma teaches

History with Leonardo Lima is a channel about... history, created by the teacher... Leonardo Lima! Haha.

Jokes aside, Léo is a great friend who not only possesses immense charisma but also has enviable teaching skills. His passion for education led him to create content for social media, aiming to democratize knowledge and explore new formats - where he can connect with his other interests such as culture, games, music, etc.

The main inspirations for the channel's visual identity were Léo's own approach, which includes the use of anecdotes and jokes to engage the students' interest, and his equivalent among the learners, that student who expresses humor through doodles in their notebook.

Doodles in the corners of each page, faces of great figures, highlighted notes, post-its all over the place... every detail was handpicked to translate the mind of an interesting teacher (who once was an interested student).

Process Breakdown
Above: photos of my hand that were used in the animation.
Below: early study of animation and visual development.

The best part of this project certainly was being able to explore a true mixed-media workflow. I intended to use even more analogue elements, but it was fun to simulate different physical aspects of paper stop-motion, such as:

- Low framerate (and different framerates for each element)
- Distortion caused by ripples (and I have to thank Ben Mariott for this one!)
- Realistic shadows
- Working with multiple layers of paper and hand-drawn elements.
