Dark Nights: Metal Dust Jacket

Dark Nights: Metal
Dust Jacket Design

This was a personal project for a custom bound book containing all the comic issues from the Dark Nights: Metal event.

The design centred around a slight re-design of the title treatment based on a style of the logo DC seemed to only use for a small sticker sized stamp on tie-in issues for the story.

I redrew the logo as a large scale black and white drawing in Procreate and exported this to Adobe CC where I was able to turn it into a vector and play around with the skewed/distorted shape.
I knew I wanted to use the variant cover image of the Batman who laughs by Jim Cheung on the front of the jacket and so the colours used for the logo and some of the other details were pulled from that image to tie everything together.

This hasn't been printed yet, but ideally there would be some spot varnish treatment on the pink text and weathering/brush stroke shapes to give the book that extra pop when it catches the light.
I've always been quite disappointed in the logo treatment for the follow up event - Dark Nights: Death Metal, and so I decided to re-imagine this, taking inspiration from death metal and hard rock logos such as that of Ozzy Ozborne and Led Zeppelin.
