Uni Yr 3: Pedastal Fan

The Task: Design a Pedestal fan for a contemprary family home or office.

the brief:
Design a Pedestal fan for a contemprary family home or office. A Premium quality convenient means of controlling the environmental temperature.

Creating a differentiating aesthetic in the market place. Electrically powered and with Simple user interface (3 control speeds). With height adjusted to suit location and use (max 1400mm). With Assemblly and disassembly consideration for packaging and transportation from manufacture

Being environmentally conscious in design considerations to move the business toward more sustainable and environmentally friendly methods of manufacture. Keeping plastic to a minimum.

existing product research:
Pedastal fans consist primarily of a base to disperse the weight load, an outer and inner tube to provide height adjustment and a protected set of fan blades cpnnected to a spindle and motor housing.

Researching what materials are most commonly used when producing pedastal fans. Whereby expensive fans are made of aluminium and cheaper fans made of PP.

Design direction visual boards:
once understanding the existing product design, I looked into possible directions for the products form. Looking into biomimicry and sustainability and contemporary homes and offices, to inform design form, materials and manufacturing.

Design direction let out:
from the visual research, I started to let out and ideate product form and viability, to hone into my three designs influenced by three different directions.

Design directions:
Concept 1 is developed in the contemporary home direction, creating a conversation piece product. Using a large lever to control the height of the fan. With a gap to see the wiring from the base to the motor component.

Concept 2 is developed in the contemporary office direction. To redesign the fan, from a two-tube system to a pendulum style product. having the motor and spindle attached to the top component. Taking a more professional approach.

Concept 3 is developed based on the move to sustainability. With the form developed through biomimicry. Taking inspiration from bamboo shoots for both the materials and the form of the product. Using a spin lock between lower and upper tubing, to adjust height. With the fan head being on the side, as a feature.

Design appendix:
inital design ideas, to spark the possible directions

technical development:
From this I developed the office contemporary design further, taking the pendulum form further and developing components of the product separately, to refine the fan blades, hinging and fan motor internals.

refined design:
Designed for a contemporary office or home, developed to be easily adjusted in both height and overall form. Creating a product that changes form as the height of the product adjusts.

technical details:
An exploded view of both the pedestal fan body and the pedestal fan head. Showing internal components, fixings and locking pins. Determining the product make up, to be sustainable and easy to disassemble. Using PLA where needed to hold internal components in place.

The final product:
Conversational Piece in any environment. Able to complement any space, with an elegant design complementary to the clients styling.
