Anti-Littering Campaign

This is a voting bin for a HUBBUB Anti-Littering Campaign. The concept is that you use any rubbish you might have to vote in one bin or the other, the bins a clear which means you can view the rubbish levels in passing and see which side is winning.
Final Design - Initial Sketches
I observed people everywhere with regard to littering; I wanted to see why and how people were leaving rubbish behind.
I noticed three main littering tactics:
1. The 'rest and walk', the reason litter is left on ledges, walls, windowsills and even on top of bins.
2. The 'stop then abandon', I’d say this is the most common, resting a cup or newspaper down next to you while you sit, and then conveniently forgetting it when you get up to leave.
3. The classic 'moving drop', done when people think you aren’t looking, a quick flick of a wrapper or bit of gum and it's gone.
What all these situations scream at me is laziness. But why are people lazy with littering? Because they are uninterested.
There is no drive for them to behave differently and that is what my design aims to change. It works on the premise that the key to motivating this change is competition.
The bin holds three main advantages:
1. It's minimal use of materials, and easy manufacture means that it would be incredibly easy to create just a few, as well as mass-produce if the product became very successful.
2. There are endless opportunities for social media interaction. People will want to share photos of the bin when it is in their favour, or if the outcome is unexpected. Results could be collected and displayed online, or on the bin for the previous day. It could be used to promote events, competitions, newspapers; the possibilities are endless.
3. The key to pushing someone to his or her absolute best is often competition. The essence of competition is a great motivator to get people to put rubbish in a bin rather than on the floor. If your side is winning you will vote to feel superior, if your side is losing you vote through loyalty, whatever the bin is doing, you are pulled in.
Everyone has an opinion and the rewarding observation here is that people enjoy expressing that opinion.
