Romeo & Juliet Promo Posters - Shakespeare Company

Romeo and Juliet - a classic tale of romance and death. For this project we were given the task of creating posters for a theatrical production of this Shakespearean play at the Twilight Theatre in Brighton. The color scheme was kept minimal to represent of the opposing sides of the Montagues and the Capulets, with Romeo and Juliet meeting (forbiddingly) in the middle. The graphics were digitally hand illustrated and the font was carefully chosen to create a somewhat formal, yet free feeling.
It's important to see a design in it's intended environment, whether it be as a bus stop poster, a billboard, web banner, etc. For this instance it was good for those throughout Brighton to be aware of the goings-on at the Twilight Theatre, and seeing as this is particularly a high traffic area, anyone passing by would see this sign.
As it is for all work, it's best to have a realistic mockup so that the client can see the real-world application of the final product. This specific mockup was chosen to reflect the clean and minimal look of the design itself. The layout of this particular poster is balanced in an asymmetrical way, with the names on opposing sides and the actual information on the play being in the negative space at the bottom right.
Alternatively, the designer took it upon herself to create a variant poster to further express the opposing families in Romeo and Juliet, using only typography. This puts the focus more on the names and color palette, to communicate the plot in a simple and eye-catching way by contrasting their world's. Taking the attention away from any imagery promotes a more metaphorical meaning behind the poster.
