Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), also known as Doctors Without Borders, is on the forefront of employing technology to better help people around the world get emergency care. Just recently, the organization completed a successful test of using virtual reality and 3-D printing to design hospitals. In the past, MSF used 2-D drawings before building a new hospital, but the introduction of this new technology will give doctors more tools to ensure each hospital best exploits the strength of its location.

The test was led by MSF’s technical team leader Elvina Motard, who took the plans for a MSF hospital in the Philippines and, with the help of a team of experts, digitized them and developed a 3-D printed facility and virtual reality experience. It took a total of four months for the project to be completed, but future use of the technology will take less time as a result of this pilot project.
