Beach litter campaign

University year 1 project- A short project where the task was to create an alternative media campaign for a selected cause. I chose to focus on beach litter, which led me to research the Ocean Conservancy. I wanted to create an ambient campaign (something that sits in an area without causing any form of obstruction, and is natural to the location) as I feel this would compliment the Ocean Conservancy's message of protecting the environment. My idea was to use shells as a canvas, on which I'd draw quick illustrations. Initially, I wanted to paint scenes of wildlife being negatively impacted by litter, however this proved difficult on such a small space. Instead, I painted the top most common items of litter found by the Ocean Conservancy.

The bright colours are eye-catching, however the illustrations and handwriting are crude and almost
incomprehensible. It may be a good idea to apply the same concept to a larger area, e.g. boulders or cliff faces- although this would result in a much greater impact on the environment, becoming a guerrilla campaign instead.
As an experiment, I put the shells in a scanner and decided to create a poster with the outcome. The shadows and blurry sections create a unique effect, and make an unusual composition.
