Before Building the final sculpture I had multiple ideas about what the final price would look like, so I made some maquette to visualise and evaluate my ideas
The first design was very minimal and focused on capturing the human form in the simplest way possible.
In this version the support for the sculpture came up through the knee.
I also experimented using clay and having the wires protrude rather gruesomely from the figure.
In this clay figure the wires and clay were used to extend the human figure.
However this sculpture was never realistic on a large scale, as the clay would weigh a huge amount and need immense support and the object would be too big to fire and thus the clay would have to stay wet.
This final maquette was in a different pose, however I was post please with the technique. I thought it was interesting how the wire curves and from flesh and muscle.
like the final sculpture, this maquette has a thicker metal skeleton which is then wrapped in wire.
After evaluating all the maquette, I decided to follow this design as I found it the most interesting and practical to do on a large scale. The large scale sculpture only had two changes. The base was changed from just a wooden block to a counter balance system as the sculpture weighed quite a lot. And the sculpture now connected to teh base through an exetnsion of the spine, not through the knee or foot. This was an asthetic decision taken becasue I felt the final design made the base feel more incorporated and part of the whole sculpture.
The Base is made from an Iron Triangle and two Iron Rods all welded together in a formation that counterbalances the forward weight of the sculpture.
The frame Itself is also made from cut and bent, in the case of the ribcage, iron rods. They formed the skeleton of the figure.
I then using sculpture worse wrapped wire around, attempting to make muscles and flesh. I deliberately left some of the sculpture loose in from as I felt it gave the sculpture a sense of movement and energy.
