The Living Poster - A Random Act of Creativity

The living poster experiment is a collaborative art project between Photographer and Retouch Artist Erik Johansson, Creative technology company We Are Digital, Advertising Agency Abby Norm and Adobe Systems. The goal of the project was to mix  technologies in an attempt to challenge traditional media boundries and create something new.

The concept

A person in what appears to be a normal printed poster suddenly comes to life and is able to interact with the viewer. In a room next door an actor is filmed in real time and then projected on top of the poster, seamlessly blended with the printed art work, giving the illusion that the person is alive in the painting.

The person inside the green screen studio can see the audience and talk to them using monitors and microphones.

Break down

This is the final image Erik produced. 10 x 3 meters big and 14 155 pixels wide.

Part of the original image was removed to allow for projection. The light from a projector is white. The color black only means the absence of light. So in order to blend the space was left white in the print for the projector to fill in the missing pixels.

The projected light here illustrated in red.

This experiment was performed at the Adobe Create Now 2014 event in London, Shoreditch. Watch it in action:
